The parish of St. Elizabeth is located in the County of Cornwall in the southwest of the Island of Jamaica. The capital town of St. Elizabeth is a charming old town called Black River named after the sparking blue waters of the Caribbean. St. Elizabeth is named in honor of Elizabeth the wife of a former Governor. St. Elizabeth is popular for its farming community and is called the “feeding basket” of Jamaica. St. Elizabeth is Jamaica’s second largest parish. St. Elizabeth is a major manufacturer of bauxite, an aluminum ore, which when blasted with hydroelectric power becomes transformed into aluminum. Two major sugar factories are located in the Parish of St. Elizabeth along with a variety of crops including: cassava, peas, pimento, and tobacco. This parish also has an abundance of livestock and is known for its magnificent natural environment and its charming old fashioned farming and fishing villages. The parish of St. Elizabeth has become a popular tourist destination since the 1990’s. Tourist destinations such as Treasure Beach, Appleton Rum Distillery, Lovers Leap and YS Rivers are a few of the attractions that continue to make this a sought after tourist attraction on the Island of Jamaica. St. Elizabeth has approximately 44 caves, a few notable ones are: Mexico, Peru Cave, Yhardly Chase Caves and Wallingford Caves.
